How to clip streams and podcasts into Shorts

A two-hour stream or podcast holds a week of Shorts — if you can find the moments. This is how clippers do it, by hand and with AI.

What makes a good clip

  • It starts on the hook: the first line gives the viewer a reason to stay. No "so anyway" openings.
  • It stands alone: someone who never saw the stream understands it.
  • It has energy: a reaction, a strong opinion, a story with a payoff, a surprising number.
  • It ends cleanly, on the punchline or the point — not trailing off.

1. Find the moments

By hand, this means scrubbing the whole recording and noting timestamps where the energy jumps: laughter, raised voices, chat going wild, a strong quote. The transcript helps — skimming text is faster than watching. If the video has YouTube chapters, each chapter usually holds at least one clip.

2. Frame it upright, on the speaker

Shorts are 9:16. A wide stream shot needs to be cropped around whoever is talking and follow them if they move. For two-person podcasts, the crop should switch to the person speaking, or show both stacked.

3. Cut the dead air and add captions

Remove pauses, "um"s and false starts — a clip that feels fast keeps people watching. Then add big, readable captions; most people watch with the sound off at first. Highlighting each word as it is said keeps the eye moving.

4. Add a heading and post

A short heading at the top saying what the clip is about ("He lost $10k on his first trade") tells the viewer why to watch before the first word. Write a caption with a couple of relevant hashtags, and post consistently.

Let AI do the clipping

  1. 1

    Drop in the video

Upload it or paste a YouTube link. Zlayo transcribes every word.

  2. 2

    It picks the moments

Each stretch is scored on talking, loudness compared with the rest of the video, reactions and how strong the opening line is. Times and topics you name in your rules are clipped first, and moments already clipped from the same video are never clipped twice.

  3. 3

    Get finished shorts

Cropped upright around the speaker, dead air and filler cut, starting on the hook, captioned in your look, with a heading if you want one.

Questions

Not on Zlayo. Auto-Clip is on the paid plans, from $19 a month, because it listens through the whole recording first.

Yes. Paste timestamps like 1:07:12-1:08:21 and Zlayo cuts exactly those.

Yes, as well as uploads. YouTube chapters are used to spread clips across the video.
