What makes a good hook for short videos?

A hook is whatever stops the scroll in the first one to three seconds. It can be a question, a claim, or a picture. The rest of the clip only gets watched if the hook works, so it is the part worth rewriting.

- A question the viewer wants answered: How do people post ten shorts a day?
- A bold claim: Your best clip is hiding in the middle of your stream.
- A contradiction: Everyone does this wrong.
- A number: Three mistakes that slow every edit.
- A scene: POV: you just recorded a two-hour podcast.
- A result first, then how: show the finished clip, then explain.
- A challenge: Try to watch this without smiling.
- A warning: Do not post before you check this.
- A cliffhanger: The last line changes everything.
How to cut a clip so it starts on the hook
Most long videos begin with a warm-up. A short clip cannot afford one. Find the sentence where the point actually begins, and start there. If the best line comes late, move the clip so it begins on it, or lead with that line as a heading.
Headings help
A short title in the top band tells people what the clip is about before the first caption lands. Zlayo adds one by default on Auto-Clip clips, written from what the clip is about, and you can change or remove it on each clip.
What not to do
- Do not open with a logo, a greeting or a long intro.
- Do not promise something the video does not deliver. It hurts you later.
- Do not copy a hook word for word. Borrow the shape, write your own line.

Start every clip on the hookQuestions
A few words to one sentence. If it needs more, it is not a hook yet.
Auto-Clip starts each clip on the strongest opening line it finds and adds a heading from what the clip is about. You can try hook variations on any clip.
Both help. A spoken line and a matching heading give two chances to hold someone.
Yes, but the rules differ. This guide is about short vertical clips.
